点评:Tuesday 13th May and we travelled on the Hakone Ropeway from from Togenda Station, through Ubako up to Owakudani Station and Nature Reserve
The Nature Reserve and it's Nature Study Path are at a height of 1,044 meters (3,425 feet). It is possible to take a guided tour along the path, this requires a prior reservation. We were able to see shelters along the pathway which visitors and staff had to use in the event of an eruption.
When we reached the summit the smell of sulphur permeates through the air from the volcanic steam vents. We could see plumes of smoke belching out from the ground. We also could see deposits of sulphur around them (reviewed separately).
While walking around the permitted areas we visited the small Shrine, Owakudani Enmei Jizo Hakone. Here we were able to pour water over the head of the Buddha Statue, for a small donation, for which we received many blessings.
Here is famous for it's black eggs or Kuro-Tamago, they are a local specialty. They are hard boiled eggs which are cooked in the sulfurous hot springs of Owakudani Valley.
We did venture out on to the Ibuki no Deck, a glass bottomed viewing platform which juts out over the valley. From here there are views across the Valley and the the hot springs.
There were a number of viewing places here, from one in particular, from there we were hoping to see the snow capped Mount Fuji. We did see some of the moutain but sadly the weather conditions were not kind to us and the summit was shrouded in cloud.
Here is also home to the Hakone GeoMuseum, which we did not visit. The entrance fee is 100 Yen (roughly fifty pence). There is a restaurant, a number of eateries here as well a some shops.
We did visit one shop, the service was painfully slow, thought it would time to leave Owakudani before we paid for the goods.
