点评:I enjoy touring gardens of all types and I was left unimpressed with this one. It is a garden designed and planted by the Allerton family around WWII. It looks like they were trying to blend European gardens (highly manicured, groomed, and stylized) with a wild tropical rainforest and in theory that sounds interesting but in reality, at least for me, it missed the mark. The statues and ‘rooms’ are underwhelming. The lack of flowering plants is an obvious miss and the fact that there are not legible plant identification markers seems like a poor choice. Our guide was semi knowledgeable and didn’t take the time to educate us on the plants/trees unless asked.
The picture of the beach, palm trees, and house often associated with the Allerton Gardens is a restricted area. Unless you book the afternoon tour with dinner, you will not be allowed to explore that area.
You can learn more about tropical gardens in the Princeville Garden tour and the Limahuli Garden tour up north. Both are much better experiences in my opinion.
