Discover Churchill Tours的点评
点评：This year was my fourth year going on tour with Discover Churchill. I have been three times during “Polar bear” season and once during August for the “Colours of the tundra” tour.
From the first time I went on tour with Discover Churchill, it was obvious that Alex has great appreciation for Churchill, the bears, and your experience. Every guide that I have met with Discover Churchill has had a wealth of knowledge about the history of Churchill, genuinely seems to enjoy sharing its history, and takes care to maintain its beauty. If there is garbage on the ground, without hesitation they will pull over to pick it up.
Discover Churchill provides ground level viewing of polar bears and wildlife, and with their vans you are able to confidently go into areas you may have trouble navigating in a rental car. In addition, having the guides with you allows you to be able to focus on taking your images while having the peace of mind that there is somebody watching the distance of the bear, its behaviour, and the surroundings. The guides will also give you a countdown giving you a heads up to take your last burst of shots before moving back towards the van. For me, having this safety net is a huge reason why I choose to go with a tour company instead of going on my own and renting a car.
Although no Churchill tour company is cheap, Discover Churchill is one of the “cheaper” multi-day ground level tour options. Your cost includes flights to and from Winnipeg, all food, accommodations, day tour costs, and more. They can also be flexible with various aspects of the tour price. For myself being from Winnipeg, I did not require a hotel room in Winnipeg, so the cost was swiftly removed from the overall fee.
Discover Churchill also partners with wonderful bed and breakfasts that make sure you have full stomachs every morning before heading out onto the tundra. You have packed to-go style lunches so you can have the option of eating either in the field or at one of the other facilities outside of town. There are only a few restaurants in Churchill, but they work hard to provide you with various dinner options during your stay.
The guides are great spotters and are great at anticipating a bear's movements. This ensures that you are able to position yourself ahead of the bear, usually have ample time to get set up, and get great head on shots of an approaching bear and truly amazing experiences. I have had so many amazing encounters with these bears thanks to the guide’s ability to guess the bears' most likely path. It is also helpful that most of the guides are photographers themselves. This is great because they are always aware of light, angles, and backdrops for your images.
When bears are harder to come by, the guides are excellent at giving you other opportunities for images. They all have an appreciation for the historic buildings, murals, and scenes of Churchill and are happy to stop and give you the opportunity to photograph them. They are also always on the lookout for other wildlife such as arctic hares, foxes, and of course ptarmigan. When times are tough, they also “divide and conquer”, keeping in touch with each other using walkie talkies, maximizing your chances of sightings. The back-and-forth humour the guides have on these walkie talkies also add to the overall enjoyment of the trip.
One of the main reasons that I continue to choose Discover Churchill year after year, is due to their wildlife ethics. During peak bear season, it can be a real zoo in Churchill and I have seen my fair share of unethical behaviour by other companies and individuals.
All of the guides with Discover Churchill have a great appreciation and respect for Polar bears.
Instead of adding to the crowd of vehicles and people already surrounding and overwhelming a bear, Discover Churchill’s guides choose not to join in. Instead, they will either find another bear that their guests can view or anticipate where the current bear is headed and wait there without the crowds instead. This sometimes requires a little bit of patience from the guests, but it allows the bear to choose how it wants to approach and gives the guests a chance at sharing a moment with a bear that is relaxed, comfortable, and acting natural. The guides also always ensure there is a path for the bear to take with the goal of interfering as little as possible with where the bear was naturally going to walk. They will never “chase “ a bear and will purposefully take a long way around to ensure they are not pressuring a bear or getting too close or causing it stress.
This past trip I was able to view bears sparring, a nursing cub, many moms and cubs, and had many close, head on encounters that provided amazing photo opportunities and experiences, all while the guides kept us and the bears safe. I am thankful and humbled to have had so many wonderful encounters with these bears and other sub-arctic wildlife over these past few years. Thank you Alex, Drew, Tomas, and the Daves for these past few seasons. You are a wonderful crew. I am already looking forward to my next visit and I look just as forward to seeing you guys as I do seeing the wildlife of Churchill.
