Take the elephant safari, not the jeep safari
Kaziranga National Park的点评
点评:We took two jeep safaris in the morning (Western Zone) and afternoon (Central Zone), the vehicles are allowed which enter the park between 7.30-9.30 am and 1.30-3.30 pm. The rides are dusty and noisy and bumpy and should a rhino be sighted at any close distance (most of them were hundreds of meters away across marshes) you end up in a traffic jam of jeeps. It's not a pleasant experience through its the only way you can get to see the various vegetation types of the park, grassland, swamp, forest etc. because the jeeps cover more ground. Of the two zones noted above the Central Zone is more forested in parts, open in others, and is probably the more scenic zone, but some of the forested roads were seriously in bad shape. My Fitbit added 20K steps across the two rides!
The elephant safaris are available for the Western Zone (Indian nationals) and Central Zone (foreigners and not mentioned in the literature - Indian - supposedly - VIPs) in what is an interesting discrimination though apparently they do it to manage the high demand for the Central Zone. These get booked through your hotel or tour operator in general, it's almost impossible to book them online. The difference I saw was that in the Western Zone safaris you sit 2 to a wood bench, facing sideways, so 4 to a (larger) elephant. In the Central Zone you straddle the elephant in combinations of 3+1 mahout (larger animals) or 2+1 mahout (smaller animals) and look forward. This means that in the Western Zone safaris you're essentially looking sideways and you'd need to twist your neck and crane your head to look on the other side. In the Central Zone safari - which we were lucky to experience - viewing from side to front to side is a much more natural experience.
All that said, the elephant safari is an incredible experience in the silent and moist dawn, having the elephant grass come up to your legs (or waist if you're on a smaller animal) and viewing rhinos and deer up close is a surreal experience. While the rides don't cover much ground and essentially stay in the grasslands not too far from the park entrances - if you want an experience to remember for the rest of your life, this is the safari to take.
