Disappointing stop in Falmouth, Jamaica
Historic Falmouth Cruise Port的点评
点评：This port does not seem ready for prime time. The area within the cruise terminal is nice and has shops inside new buildings. You can see the damage of the recent hurricane that passed through the island on some roofs but everything had been cleaned. The area outside the terminal is run down and few things have been repaired or upkept. While it's doesn't feel dangerous because of the police roaming the area, it is not ready for tourism yet and is a bit intimidating. There is a sign that says that there is a ongoing project of training young locals about customer service skills and to be licensed pedicab drivers, so there are definitely some efforts to improve the area but the buildings are not maintained at all and there is not much to see and do within walking distance from the exit of the terminal area. Some locals tried to convince us to take a ride on their taxi or to go to a nearby venue, but we just wandered around for about 30 minutes before heading back to the terminal for some shopping at the Craft Market and the shops around it.
If the efforts continue in the right direction this place could become much more touristy. Doing some research on the location and wondering why cruise lines started going to Falmouth, I read that it has an interesting history, is a natural deep water port, has a large turning basin, and is a harbour with good natural protection from sea storms, maybe has lower managing costs and higher government incentives for its development, and also has new infrastructure being build to newer standards able to accommodate mega ships, bringing tourists there, partnering with locals for activities and diversifying the offering. While cruise lines are not "running out" of places to go, new ports like Falmouth may increase the offer, so it is appealing to start going there.
