点评:Compared to some picture-perfect Cotswold villages like Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Campden has a more regular, working town feel. It’s not so much wall-to-wall tourism. Instead, it feels as if locals still live and work here so it has a different vibe.
However the High Street still has real Cotswold charm and is lined with honey-coloured buildings and historic houses made of the local limestone, as well as several of pubs, like the The Red Lion and the Noel Arms.
Some of the most significant buildings on the street date back centuries. Grevel House was built in the 14th century.
It is a very attractive one to stroll down. Half way along, it splits into Upper and Lower High Streets, with a village green in the centre. This is where you’ll find the main feature - the Old Market Hall. It catches your eye immediately.
Built in 1627, by Sir Baptist Hicks, Lord of Chipping Campden Manor, the hall is incredibly well-preserved and looks pretty much the same as it would have done 400 years ago. The original floor is still in place and you can see the wear from centuries of use on the ancient cobbled stone pavers.
Just outside the hall, there’s a circular limestone disc set into the floor which marks the official start of the Cotswold Way.
Opposite is the town’s war memorial and the historic Town Hall.
PARKING:
We were able to park at one end of the High Street and walk through the town. We arrived in the late afternoon on a fairly drizzly, dull day and whilst there still wasn’t a lot of parking there were some spots.
