Stow-on-the-Wold Market Square的点评
点评:Stow-on-the-Wold should have a magnificent market square but the effect is somewhat spoiled because it doubles up as a large carpark.
Car-parking aside, there’s a lot to see here.
The square is surrounded by historic buildings like St Edward’s Hall and Porch House, which claims to be the oldest pub in England. This is no idle claim as its timbers have been carbon dated to approximately 1000 AD and it still has witch marks above the 16th century fireplace.
In the square’s centre is a towering 15th century market column and on the tiny village green is an original set of medieval stocks.
If you have a little time on your hands, there is a good range of clothing, antique, homewares, and foodie shops, centred around the square. Most are housed in the old, honey-coloured stone cottages that are so characteristically Cotswold. We couldn’t resist Roly’s Fudge and the Huffkins Tea Rooms & Bakery.
Everything here is steeped in history. We went to Huffkins for tea and toasted buns but then we discovered that it’s the oldest building in the square, built around 1450.
The most famous Stow attraction is located just behind the square - the Tolkien-like doorway St Edwards Church.
While you walk around the market square, keep an eye out for blue plaques. They are fixed on the walls of significant buildings and give a brief history of each one.
NOTE:
Whilst it’s convenient to park in the square, be aware that it can be difficult to find a spot in the middle of the day in summer and parking is limited to 2 hours. If like us, you are spending longer here, the nearby Tesco carpark has all day, free parking, although it is a short walk back to the square.
