点评：Powell Gardens was founded as a dairy farm in 1948, then became a Boy Scout camp and an agricultural and natural resource center before being converted into a 970-acre botanical garden in 1988. Located at 1609 Northwest US Highway 50 in Kingsville, Missouri, 30 miles east of Kansas City, it features 6,000 varieties of plants with 225,000 plants in seasonal displays. The complex includes a Visitor Center that is home to the Powell Gardens Conservatory, serves as the centerpiece for the surrounding gardens and also features a gift shop and a restaurant, Cafe Thyme. Among the noteworthy gardens is the Heartland Harvest Garden, a 12-acre garden with many fruits and vegetables, home to one of the most edible landscapes in North America; the three-mile Byran Shutz Nature Trail with native and naturalizes trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers; the five-acre Perennial Garden with more than 1,200 varieties of plants; Fountain Garden with its 42-foot diameter interactive water feature; Marlese Lowe Gourley Island Garden with tiered pools that offer an array of water plants in the summer; and Memorial Garden, with a trickling fountain that attracts birds and butterflies. Memorial Garden is located next to the iconic Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel, a 4,700-square-foot nondenominational wedding chapel.
