Not horrible, but not worth $400 either.

点评：We looked forwards to this "Fall Foliage" excursion from Reading to Jim Thorpe, and even paid the premium price ($199 each) for the Vista car. However, the ride did not live up to our expectations, much less the four hundred dollar cost. First, the windows in the Vista car looked like they hadn't been washed for several months. For an excursion that promised "great visuals" and photographic opportunities, it was difficult to reconcile the pigeon poo and general grime on the windows. Secondly, the "snacks available" ended up being two foam coolers with 7-up and bottled water, and a few bags of Famous Amos cookies.
The journey itself was as expected, a slow (20-25 mph) run through the Pennsylvania country side up to Jim Thorpe. When we got there, the little town was packed, as it was their third "fall foliage weekend" of 2024. Its not that we mind crowds, and obviously the railroad has little control over it, but it would have been nice to have been told that the town would seem like Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras.
The trip back was marred by the fact that the late start (around 4:30 pm or so) meant at least half the trip was in complete darkness, making it difficult to see the fall foliage. I understand the need for a long enough stop in Jim Thorpe to see the sights, but we did spend two hours sitting on a bench because the crowds were so overwhelming, there was little point in walking around again. Also, the lines for food were long, and the quality once there was not that great. Again, not the rail line's fault, but I think potential customers for this "excursion" should be aware that the time spent in Jim Thorpe may be problematic.
