Mixed Feelings About a Jewelry Purchase in Sri Lanka

点评：During my holiday in Sri Lanka, I visited Azeiya and bought a beautiful pair of earrings. The design was lovely, and the price was very economical, which I thought was a great deal at the time. The shop seemed reputable, and the staff appeared knowledgeable, so I was quite happy with my purchase.
However, after returning home, the earrings accidentally broke—one of the stones chipped. I took them to my personal jeweler to get them repaired, and that’s when I learned something that surprised me. The jeweler told me that the stones were actually man-made quartz, not natural gems as I had expected. I explained to him that I bought them from a well-regarded jeweler in Galla, and he informed me that it’s not uncommon for this to happen in tourist areas, where competition is high, and shops often use cheaper materials.
While I understand that some tourist markets may have lower-quality items, I feel it’s not ethical to mix natural and man-made stones, especially in a gem-rich country like Sri Lanka, where people expect high-quality gems. It’s disappointing to think that such practices might be common in competitive tourist areas. I think it's important for customers to be informed about what they're buying, especially when it comes to valuable items like jewelry.
