First off, I wanted to say that we were really looking forward to this trip so much so that we booked the "Top Deck Club" to ensure we had the ultimate experience. However, our experience was anything but that. I have been on over 20 different liveaboard and day trip dive boats with far superior service than what was provided here. If we could select ZERO STARS for this review we would. This is going to be a long and detailed review but I promise you well worth the read before you book if you are an experienced diver!
TOP DECK CLUB
This is advertised as "The best rooms with a personal valet, dive guide for all dives, gourmet meals, and late check-out." that also includes a hefty price increase for these additions.
The ride out:
We were first to arrive early and no one greeted us. Then the crowds of day trip snorkelers arrived and swarmed in front of us. Nowhere was there a separate line for the people that booked the top deck club. After the staff sorted a few people, ewe finally met our "personal valet" and were escorted to the top deck for the ride out where ALL of the other divers were also escorted. Once the boat left the dock, they brought out orange slices to the table and breakfast sandwiches. The table next to us received a whole breakfast meal, fresh omelet, croissants, sausage and bacon, with strawberries and other tropical fruit. This had us wondering why they received this meal and we did not when we PAID for the Top Deck Club.
The room:
Basic looking (as advertised). Other divers used the front windows and railings to dry and store dive gear making privacy impossible unless the window curtains were closed. There was also mold and dust around all of the furniture.
The food:
This was the biggest false advertising! The photos online show seared tuna, salmon, shrimp, streak, fancy plated meals, delicate individual appetizers, and cheese plates. None of this was the food they served nor was any of its restaurant quality like mentioned on their website. Here are the meals we had that were in buffet style chaffing dishes: Curry and rice with chicken, chicken parmesan with mashed potatoes (This was our "fancy" plated private top deck meal that was delivered to our table cold). Breakfast had toast, cereal, eggs, oat pancakes, sausage, and orange slices. They even forgot to put out the syrup, butter, and jams until the staff got their food. The worst food I would have to say was a pizza lunch that tasted like the frozen pizza you received in grade school. Also, another thing worth pointing out is that our private reserved table seemed to get worse and worse (missing one thing or another always) and for the last lunch our private valet forgot entirely to set it up so we had nowhere to sit and had to cram in with another table. The food in the chaffing dishes also had a limit on what guests could take but when the staff were getting their food, they regularly piled it high before making sure guests had enough to eat. The dessert was also a sheet of carrot cake and ice cream.
The bar:
Overpriced! Additional coffee, soda, and lemonade is additional. There is no sunset cocktail if you are doing the night dive. You cannot drink 8 hours before a dive (kind of makes sense). we opted to have a beer during lunch on our last day since we were done with diving and were charged for that since the bartender said it was not a cocktail (kind of important information that should be provided to Top Deck guests). Note that the night dive ends at 7:30pm and the first morning dive is at 6:15am which means that you have to be quick changing and showering in case you wanted to enjoy an adult beverage before bed.
The ride back:
On the day we are scheduled to leave they informed us that the transfer boat was undergoing maintenance and that we will need to be transferred via inflatable zodiac with all of our luggage to a different company’s boat. Note all of our luggage and us got sprayed with salt water during this transfer making us wet and salty all the way back to the mainland. Since we were on another company’s boat there was ZERO top deck experience and we were crammed on their boat with all of their guests and luggage piled everywhere!
NOT FOR EXPERIENCED DIVERS
We paid extra for the personal dive guide with the Top Deck Club for peace of mind to find the dive site "highlights" easier and to allow for longer dives. If your sole purpose is to dive and you are interested in seeing the reef this is NOT the company you want to use. This company takes you to the same dive sites over and over again and does not move the boat often (so if you booked multiple days on the boat have fun seeing the same sites). Also, our personal guide could not locate several of the highlights at the sites like the giant clams which took her 25 minutes to eventually find (on a dive that is limited to 40 minutes total). By the time she found them there was another instructor literally doing skills for a diver that was getting certified on the sand next to them silting up the whole area and causing the clams to close. What a way to preserve the site. Also, most dives were rushed and limited on times (more info below). The guide circled the site showing the same area over and over again (I literally have the same photo with different time stamps because it was the only thing she guided us to repetitively in circles.
AIR FILLS AND GEAR
Again, we paid extra for the Top Deck Club experience and this was also listed on a white board on the deck with what spot our gear was in. THREE times the deck crew forgot to fill my tank and I had to ask them (which was a hot fill each time). On the third time they forgot to connect my first stage to the tank entirely (their excuse was that they rinsed BCDs and must have missed it). Can you imagine what would have happened if a new diver had this happen to them? NOT TO MENTION WHY OUR PRIVATE GIUDE DID NOT MAKE SURE THIS WAS TAKEN CARE OF EACH TIME BEFORE WE GOT IN OUR GEAR!
TIME LIMITS UNDERWATER
One thing that was not advertised was the time limits set for each dive when booking. This was a surprise that was sprung on us when we got aboard and was listed on a sheet of paper in each room and discussed during the dive briefing. Note that on the first day that you arrive you can only snorkel for the 10:15am time and what a waste (All the day trip snorkelers are also in the water during this time at the same site.)
6:15am - 50 minutes
10:15am - 50 minutes
13:15pm - 40 minutes
15:30pm - 40 minutes
19:00pm - 30 minutes (although the paper in the room said 40 minutes)
Even with our personal dive guide these time limits were strict so much so that we had over half an air tank full each time and our personal dive guide even made us ascend and do our safety stop far away from the boat and do a LONG surface swim to make sure this rule was followed. NOT THE EXPERIENCE WE PAID FOR! Limits on bottom depths were also required and a crew member would not let you set your gear down until you read your gages and signed a paper. This behavior seemed really weird at first but is standard for a company that is on PROBATION for SAFETY VIOLATION where they had a guest DIE and has to report dive times and depths to verify dives and calculate dives using dive tables.
CAMERA GEAR
This is also not the company and boat that you want to book if you are a diver that enjoys underwater photography. For starters they do not have a dedicated camera dunk bin to rinse off your camera. The water bin the crew directed me to use was the same bin the other divers rinse their masks in and other gear that has soap on it which can damage O-rings and flood your expensive camera easily.
During the dive good luck getting any quality photos as your guide is constantly rushing you along and won’t let you stop long enough to focus on anything.
When getting into and out of the water the crew has no idea how to assist you and help with expensive camera gear. They would like you to enter with a giant stride off the platform deck and walk backwards with fins (Both which are not optimal/conducive with camera gear and should be recognized and allowed to be modified if the divers show experience).
I also would like to mention that this is probably because they are geared towards new divers and hire a photographer to take photos of you which you can gladly purchase for an obscene amount of money. Something like one photo $100, four photos $150 and a folder of the exceptional photos they took during the month or months on the boat for $400.
THE CREW
All of the crew is young and inexperienced or acted like it. The captain was the only one that had experience and was "herding" the crew the entire time trying to get them to do their assigned duties. The crew never would help you with your gear and even if this is not standard practice on boats in Australia it is definitely expected when you pay for a personal valet and dive guide. They appeared clique and more interested in having a good time themselves instead of focused on the guests experience and their safety.
BOOKING OPTIONAL EXTRA TOURS
We also thought that booking the following day through them to visit Karanda would be a good idea but they ruined it. We paid for the upgraded "Gold Class" however when the tour bus dropped us off at the train station, they booked us on the regular class ticket which is way different in price and services. We then spent an hour trying to save this and get the correct train ticket (The train station people literally saved the day by personally calling this company to try and fixed this mistake). Now that we were about an hour late for our tour and missed parts of it the work around, they suggested us to get an Uber to the Skyrail and take the Gold Class Train in the afternoon. To which this company said that they would refund us the price of the Uber and they have NOT. It's been over two months and we have not received a refund. The company finally emailed us asking for us to fill out a paper form with all of our credit card information and email it back to try and get a refund. What a complete scam from this company for something THEY messed up on.
