点评:Azerbaijan, is home to nearly 300 of the world’s estimated 700 mud volcanoes, making it one of the largest concentrations globally. These geological formations are not true volcanoes but are formed by tectonic activity forcing pressurized gases, mud, and water to the surface, creating a surreal, moon-like landscape. It was a wonderful site.
Located in Gobustan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its prehistoric petroglyphs, the mud volcanoes are about an hour’s drive from Baku along the Caspian coast. The terrain is rugged, requiring off-road vehicles like old Soviet Ladas for the bumpy 10-15 km ride from the main road, it was a part of our guided tour, which is highly recommended. Both destination and journey was one of its kind, in a highly remote place but the surreal experience was worth it. Watching Mud volcanoes was a delightful experience. Be cautious of uneven, muddy terrain and potential gas hazards; avoid applying mud to skin due to methane content.
