点评：While the majority of medieval Europe was characterized by tight and crooked roads, Speyer is defined by one of the straighter and wider roads and it is intentional. When the Salian Kings chose Speyer as their Cathedral city, they also got a relatively blank slate in this cowtown to engineer their own city. Today, it is easy to see the street as simply a rare boulevard for shopping in this historic medieval city. No, it was designed to be a grand ceremonial road, the "Via Triumphalis", to run straight East - West between the western city entrance gate to the door of the Salian Cathedral, a true rarity for all of medieval Europe.
The story we were told was that when Corad II rose to King of Germany, Italy and Holy Roman Emperor, his family was actually from Worms but had a serious falling out with the Bishop of Worms. So, in his new role, he chooses a relatively minor village, Speyer, for his Cathedral and then shaped it into his city. What you see today is historic in itself as both the Altportel and Cathedral are perfectly framed by this grand street.
We visited on a sunny morning and walked the entire street from the Cathedral to the Altportel and then beyond to the Memorial Church. Unfortunately, for most of the time we had in Speyer, the shops were closed, not opening until 10. However, it provided us time to see both the main and secondary sights on the road like the Altportel, Cathedral and several fountains. In the morning the Altporel is best for pictures in sun and the Cathedral in the afternoon. If you visit Speyer, it is a road you have to and will visit for the sites. You can truly most of the highlights of this town without ever leaving the street.
