An afternoon tour of the Burren.

点评：My wife and I recently returned from Fanore on Ireland’s west coast - on the Wild Atlantic Way - where we enjoyed a very comfortable three night stay in one of Fanore Holiday Cottages. These delightful cottages are maintained to a high standard and open fireplaces. We especially enjoyed lighting a peat fire in the evenings, which made our cottage very cosy.
During our stay we took an afternoon excursion to the Burren with Burren Mountain Tours. Our guide, Anne, drove us to the top of the mountain making stops along the way for us to capture photographs of the landscape ; a landscape created by melting glaciers thousands of years ago. Imagine walking on a lunar-like surface with extensive limestone pavements, along with boulders ranging from small to massive just as they had been deposited by glacier melt way back in time.
And yet this landscape is not merely a grey desert. Here on limestone pavements you find many kinds of formations, including grykes. Within these grykes - hollows - Irelands native plants cohabit with Arctic, Alpine and Mediterranean species.
Our afternoon tour also included a picnic provided by our guide before we moved on to take in the greener aspects of the Burren. This included a valley landscape , which had been inhabited by Neolithic era farmers somewhere between 4,000 and 2,500 years ago.
Burren Mountain Tours delivered a unique experience and one that we will always treasure. We highly recommend this tour.
