点评:Easy to locate it is on the opposing corner of St John's... between them both is the War Memorial Clock -centrally located in the roundabout. The church was open when I arrived which made for a wonderful surprise as I was able to take a quick walk through and admire the architecture and stunning stained glass windows.
This church is a sandstone church designed in Victorian Ecclesiastical Gothic. It features a notable western facade with pointed arched doorways and side recesses, as well as stained glass windows. The church is known for its large, imposing tower with a copper spire and beautifully scaled rose window.
The church was initially built in 1857 and then extensively rebuilt between 1873 and 1876, incorporating the original sanctuary and sacristy. The rebuilding was overseen by architect Edward Gell, with the construction carried out by Tambaroora contractor Mr. Webb and Bathurst stonemason Mr. Burns.
The foundations of the current church were laid in 1873, and it was officially opened in 1876. It was designed by Edward Gell, a Bathurst country architect. Interestingly enough, the architects son was Very Rev. Father Edward Gell. Ordained in the Eternal City in 1894, he returned to Australia in the same year. Later he was stationed at Pyrmont from 1905 to 1906 when he went to Ryde. During his 42 years there, Father Gell was responsible for the erection of churches and schools in the Ryde and Gladesville area.
Right next door is the very impressive presbytery. The presbytery was first built by Father Calaghan McCarthy in 1851. It consisted of four rooms and an outdoor kitchen. The presbytery has had numerous extensions over time. Till this day the presbytery remains in use. St. Mary's Presbytery is among the oldest buildings in Mudgee. It was built in 1851-52. It continues to be the residence of the Catholic priests appointed to Mudgee Parish. It is the oldest building in Mudgee still used for its original purpose.
