点评：This museum in my eyes has the invaluable merit of having made me aware of a notion that in theory I could have also remembered from my high-school studies, but which I had not reflected on: that the Sea of Okhotsk – which just by mentioning it evokes polar temperatures and frozen surfaces – borders the northern coast of Hokkaido. Here the ice drift, produced by the proximity to the “pole of cold” of eastern Siberia, on the shore of Hokkaido reaches the lowest latitude of the entire northern hemisphere, 44 and 45 degrees; which is like saying – to refer to European parameters – the latitude of Venice, or Bordeaux.
The museum is very effective from an educational point of view, so that at the end of the tour the visitor finds plausible what he or she had not even imagined before: the proximity of arctic landscapes to the substantially subtropical profile of the Japanese archipelago, from Tokyo onwards.
A bus service connecting the three main museums of Abashiri to each other and to downtown exists; even if the trips are very infrequent.
