点评:There are museums and then there are museums...
I've visited Otsuka Museum twice; once back in 2020 and then again in 2025. I chose to come back because I wanted to spend my 50th birthday at my favorite place in the world: this is it.
There are so many superlatives about this place, it is breathtaking and mind-boggling at the same time. Here's how to make the most of your visit:
You get your ticket at the entrance (3200 yen) and then take Japan's longest escalator to the exhibition starting point. From there, there are numbered rooms starting at 1 and then you follow the arrows, moving through the rooms and up the floors. There are over 100 rooms in all. The exhibition is mostly chronological after the first or six rooms, from the antiquities right through to Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. There are full scale replicas of the Sistine Chapel, grottos from Pompeii, Guernica and The Last Supper, as well as countless others and every masterpiece you can imagine.
Even if you move through at a fair clip, it will take at least three hours to see everything, but ideally longer.
To get there, you can either take a bus from Tokushima station (Number 16) or take a train to Naruto and get a bus from there. The train / bus combo is faster.
I don't need to go to The Louvre anymore because I've been to Otsuka.
