First time in over 100 dives we felt unsafe with a dive operation.

点评：I hate giving bad reviews, but as diving is a serious thing, I feel I have to.
TL;DR
We felt unsafe with this operation.
Despite what I told them about my last dive, they underweighted me so a strong current pushed me back from the boat while I was trying to get down.
My wife had to choose between following the lead DM or waiting for me when she had no idea where I was and the DM wasn’t looking after her.
Boat only had one of its 2 engines working.
Better diving at better value with other local shops
We had a 5 night stay planned at Koro Sun Resort and as divers with 100+ dives we were looking forward to diving Fiji for the first time.Our first 5 nights would be here and then on to another island for another 5.
We checked reviews and saw a well reviewed dive shop with the name of the resort and felt pretty comfortable with what we read.
We reached out ahead of our trip to let them know we were coming and what we were looking for, but never got a response.
After arriving at the resort on Tuesday and getting settled we walked over to the dive shop to chat about diving with them. They told us they did 3 dives a day, at 8:30, 10:30 and 12:30 and so we planned to join them for 2 tanks at 8:30 and then 10:30.
We asked what time we needed to be there and were told to come at 8:15.
So Wednesday morning we walked in at 8:10 and started to get our gear and sign the waivers. The other divers, who had dived before with them, were finishing up and getting onto the bot as we arrived. they asked about weight and I told them that last time I dived, it was with an extra large tank and had 18lbs. Without the large tank I’d used 20lbs
They seemed to think that was too much but said they would give me 18 and carry an extra weight if I needed.
They set the weights into the integrated pockets and slid them in. Maybe I should have checked but I was checking the rest of my gear.
We then all got off the boat and headed back to the shop for the briefing. We are used to on boat briefings usually before we leave the dock so this was fine. They tell us we would be tied up at the top of a ‘pinacle’ of coral, would descend to it at 35-40 feet, explore around then head to the edge where the deep blue was to see the sides of the pinacle then back up to the mooring to safety stop and surface. There are 2 Dive Masters on the trip and one of them is planning on looking after the 2 of us while the other leads the dive.
We asked about current and were told that ‘current is good’ and ‘its how we get to see things’
Our kit was set up at the front and so once we reached the site and they got hooked up to the morning line the other divers were first in. My wife was last but one and I was last in.
The current was strong and I was underweighted. I could not get down and so I’m bobbing along at the top of the water trying all the tricks I know, dumping air, getting water into the wetsuit, kicking down, but nothing works. I’m drifting away from the boat, (no line out) and so I signal to the boat that I need weight and start swimming against the strong current back to the boat to get the extra weight. The dive master jumps in and gives me an extra 3 lbs in my BC pocket and now I’m able with all the tricks to slowly start my descent.
The problem is with the strong current I’m now once again a ways behind the boat and the dive plan had been to move forward from the boat to the ‘pinacle’ of coral.
I’m descending and the visibility isn’t great. All I can see is the Dive master at the surface indicating that I should swim forward and I do that, eventually spotting some coral, I’d been over in the ‘deep blue’ at something like 90’
I move up the wall and meet up with the Dive Master who check in with me, and we head towards where the group should be. By the time we can see them about 40-50 feet away I realize that I’m already at half tank having spent all that time at the surface trying to get done then swimming into the current to get back.
I tell the DM and he asks if I want to go up and as at this point I’m quite tired from the fight so far, so I say yes. We head towards where the mooring line is without ever connecting with the main group, ascend on the line with a stop then up to the boat.
In the meantime, my wife has no idea where I am. She had gone in before me and saw the DM and the group all ignore the mooring line and go straight down, so she did the same and waited for me. She is with the main group and after a minute or two tells the DM that her buddy isn’t with her. But he doesn’t seem to think this is an issue. He starts to lead the group off on the dive leaving her the choice of going with them or waiting on her own for me, not knowing what was going on with me to the 2nd DM. She wisely made the choice to stay with the group. About 30 minutes in, they are back at the line and so she and one other diver who is getting a bit low on air, decide to go up rather than explore the sides. They come up and surface about 50 foot behind the boat. They start trying to swim to the boat but the strong current isn’t letting them. Eventually my DM who has been on the boat with me grabs his fins and jumps in with a line to help them back to the boat.
Once she is back on the boat we look at each other and start sharing our stories with each other. We are quickly deciding not to do the 2nd tank today. We told them on the boat that this was probably it for us for the day.
Once we were back on dry land we told them we were not going out for the 2nd tank, collected our own gear and headed back to our room to recover.
In 20+ years of diving we have never felt unsafe with a dive operation, until this experience.
We decided not to dive with them again, and instead found another operation (one that did have the same name as the resort and great reviews) and dived with them for the 2nd day of diving we had planned.
The cost of this experience was quite high. There is no price list on the wall here unlike we see in most dive shops.
All in Fiji Dollars we paid $210 each for the dive, $50 each for the equipment rental and a 3% CC fee. A total of $535.60 for 1 tank.
By way of comparison, our 2nd day was $700 all in for both of us for 2 tanks, equipment, and pickup and drop off from the resort. Much better value and we felt safe with them every minute.
