点评:Dogo Onsen was under renovation since 2019 and I felt incredibly fortunate to see it in December 2024 after all the scaffolding had come off. While I agree with other reviews that you can have a better bathing experience elsewhere, this building is among the most beautiful I have seen in Japan, and experiencing this Edo-era bathhouse first hand is magical.
I didn’t make a reservation for the baths in advance, so as a walk-in, only the first floor Kami-no-yu women’s bath was immediately available. The official website is excellent and has a live cam of the front of the onsen and estimated wait times for each bath. I stayed at a local ryokan which equipped me with a basket, onsen towel and soap.
However I did make an advance reservation online to see Yushinden. This is a private, small group tour through the rooms that were reserved for the Imperial Family (see pics). It’s a quick tour (a bit over 10 mins, though we had only 3 people in our group so it likely went faster). I had to switch my reservation time, and was able to do so simply by replying to my reservation email, in English.
This is not a luxury bath experience - if you are interested in experiencing an incredible piece of history and architecture, Dogo Onsen is truly spectacular. It is worth seeing the exterior both in the daytime and at night when it’s all lit up. There’s an amazing view from the Dogo Onsen Sky Walkway & Footbath just behind the Onsen.
