点评:These are 2 SEPARATE stops (although both have same address), and both are worthy of stopping. 1st STOP: the Chester Island Homestead, which is a nicely preserved house built in 1927 by the Chester family and donated to the National Wildlife Preserve. It includes the furnished house, a syrup shed, smokehouse, grindstone, hog pen (absent hogs), chicken yard and coop (absent chickens), and corn crib. We were lucky to be there when a volunteer was there so the house was open, but the volunteer isn’t always there. However, you can always walk around the grounds and several signs are posted with information. This is a great spot for kids to learn about how settlers in the swamp made for themselves a nice life in the edge of the Okefenokee. 2nd STOP: The Boardwalk and 40’ observation tower, located off Swamp Island Drive, maybe 1/4 mile down the one-way return loop on the right. The boardwalk is a very well maintained elevated platform through the swamp. A unique way to experience a swamp. Keep in mind it is 1.5 mike round trip walk, but it is worth the effort. There are 3 covered rest stops along the walk.
