点评:We just returned from our second visit to Suo Oshima in 2023!
I am from Hawaii and was born and raised on Kauai which is the sister city of beautiful Suo Oshima. An extensive genealogy search for my family's ancestral roots brought my husband and I here in March 2023. Thanks in large part to the efforts of our great guide and translator, Tony Shinohara who is from Suo Oshima, we visited nearby Heigun island and found five cousins whom my family on Kauai never knew existed.
Because of this discovery, we decided to return in October 2023 and were accompanied this time by my sisters and their husbands. We contacted Tony (tony8914shinohara@gmail.com) and again, experienced an unforgettable journey.
We began our trip in October by touring Yanai and Suo-Oshima. Tony took us to see Kintaikyo Bridge and the Goldfish Lanterns of Yanai. We visited a historic shoyu factory then picked the sweetest tangerines on a farm owned by Wakabayashi-san! Then we visited the Museum of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii and were kindly assisted my Mr. Igura. Setouchi Jam's Garden was our next stop with gourmet jams using seasonal fruits grown in the area. Blueberry, Fig, Citrus and Peach jams were
the perfect souvenirs and omiyage!
We stayed overnight in Suo Oshima at the most wonderful inn, Ishinabe tei.
We all enjoyed our stay here.!!! Beautifully decorated. The owners are such lovely people and gracious hosts. They prepared the most delicious Japanese meals using locally sourced ingredients, some grown on their property.
Such a fun and memorable evening!
Continuing on the next day we caught a ferry to Heigun island.
Heigun is a very small yet very special island. We saw beautiful shrines and incredible white sand beaches. We stayed overnight at the Minshoku Onoya which is an inn on Heigun island large enough to handle our group of 9. The owner prepared a delicous traditional Japanese dinner for us as well as breakfast the next day. Most importantly, we were able to connect with the original cousins we met in March and met Five more!
Thank you Tony for all your efforts as well as your expertise at guiding and translating! Thanks to you we now have amazing family history to share with our families.
This was a truly life changing trip with memories to last a lifetime!
