Brilliant museum and excavations to fill an hour or two
Local Archaeological Museum of Ancient Idalion的点评
点评：We broke the homogeneity of our beach holiday with a day out first at Camel Park (brilliant) then here at the museum and ruins of Idalion.
One of Cyprus's original 7 kingdoms, Idalion's semi-excavated remains are here as well as a small modern museum. The place is really well appointed. It's a modern building and it's clearly had a lot of money spent on it. Surprise 1 was that it's completely free to enter. Surprise 2 was that we were literally the only people there, and as such we got a bit of red carpet treatment. The gentleman on the door couldn't have been more friendly, offering us water from the free cooler (ice cold), asking if we wanted to go to the ruins first of the museum and showing us to the bottom of the hill.
The ruins are what you'd expect, and definitely interesting (Europe's best preserved bronze age olive press!). They're surrounded by modern walkways and protection from the sun - again showing the investment in the site.
When we returned to the museum our man was waiting again and offered to play the 15m promo video, which he set up for us in an otherwise empty auditorium. Amazing. And it'll make you think differently about the return of antiquities to their countries of origin.
It closes at 1600 so watch out if you're visiting later on. We were there for just over an hour, enough to do about half the ruins and the whole museum plus video.
Strongly recommended to break up the texture of your trip to Cyprus with a bit of culture, and massive thank you to the gentleman on duty :-)
