St Augustine Church & Priory的点评
点评：Our highlight in Valletta. We are visiting from the UK and found this priory by accident; walking past and the Priest, who happened to be outside, invited us in and told us about the history and recent renovation.
The site was very quiet and you could touch the ancient walls, discuss the architecture and renovation and explore in peace. The religious side is well covered in other reviews so I won’t repeat it.
The site had both the religious and “ church serving the people” history. The way the Priests educated so many children. Then, they and locals recognised the safety potential of the church vaults during the WW2 bombings and the fact they worked together to dig out further tunnels/living spaces for 200 to exist in during the worst bombings was inspirational. I hate confined spaces but loved exploring these tunnels in a safe way.
The most thought provoking part of our visit was what used to happen to the bodies of deceased priests! Nothing scary remains but seeing the room and hearing how their dead were looked after will amaze you, and you will never forget it.
