点评:We visited the trail during the Halloween Scary Trail which was a slightly amended version of the normal Faerie Trail. I believe that it's mostly the same, though.
£7.50 per person when we booked
Trail took 90 minutes with 4yr old walking (would be quicker if carrying a baby)
Booking
You need to book in advance, and there is a 15min time slot for entry. We only booked a few days in advance and the tickets were limited. Once on the trail there were clearly other families following it but we were pretty spaced out so the timed ticketing worked well to avoid over crowding. Also they must limit the numbers of tickets they sell per slot which prevents overcrowding which makes it a much nicer experience but I think this is reflected in the price, which otherwise seems quite high for the experience.
Arrival
Park in the Luss South carpark as this is where the trail starts. You check in at a shack in the car park, and a friendly assistant checks your ticket and provides a trail map. You can also buy toys and Faerie wings etc in the shack. The shack closed relatively early (obviously not before the final time slot but before we finished out trail and returned to the car).
Map/Route
The map was mostly not needed as the route is signed and often you just are just following the only woodland path. The trail map though also contains the fun quiz questions you answer, then you can submit your answers to be entered into the prize draw at the end. I found there were some mistakes in the booklet, for example one question has a 4 digit answer but there were spaces for 8 characters, and another question asks what type of tree is at that trail marker but the answer they want in the booklet is not correct. These are little mistakes but frustrating when you have paid money and when kids may be left confused and unable to complete the activity.
The route starts in the Luss centre but quickly takes you through the woods and is a pleasant route. The path is not accessible, there are some steps, some mild hills, also tree roots etc that might cause issues if you have mobility issues. It was also pretty muddy in October.
Its made pretty clear I think that the path isn't suitable for pushchairs and yet there were a few people trying to push them round.
Faerie decoration
The Faerie decoration in the woods featured quite a few Faerie houses. Also some toadstools, a wooden unicorn, a Faerie school, wooden owls in owl alley, wooden trolls etc. I found that there was a little bit of inconsistency in the style of the decor (wooden or plastic, ethereal or silly?) that bothered me a little but probably not most kids.
At one point there are some giant spell books on trees that you can open and read. The content was a little odd imo, contained American spellings which made me think it was pulled from an American website.
There were also sections where there were a lot of Faerie houses and other sections where there was a long gap between trail points and no decorations. This could be respect for the woodland, and keeping most the trail 'natural'. But then there is the glitter that has been poured over various parts of the trail. And is also available to buy from the shack at the beginning so you can encourage your children to cover the wood in tiny bits of shiny plastic. (Tbf it could be biodegradable but I doubt it and it still would look awful imo).
There are some sensors that cause music to play as you pass which is a nice effect and not scary for kids.
Halloween trail
The trail had been made 'scary- for Halloween with a story of spiders who have taken over the wood and cursed the Faerie princess. The trail points had been covered in fake spider webs and spiders which I quite liked. I'm here for giant spiders.
I assume the trail point signs had been changed for the scary trail as they all referenced the spider story. A few of them had spelling mistakes which was a shame (eg. dose instead of doze).
Most featured poems that were a bit awkward to read as they had been forced to rhyme. And usually they contained the answer to the question in the trail guide. I think they should have been simplified personally and made a bit more accessible to kids.
The trail ends at the pumpkin patch during the halloween trail. You can pay extra to take a pumpkin home but we didnt want pumpkins. My son does like looking at them so we were going to take a look anyway but the pumpkin patch closed at 4:15pm, and we got there at 4:20pm.
It seems like the final time slot is 3pm, and the website suggests it will take you 1-3hrs. So you'd have to be pretty zippy around to book a late slot and get back in time for the pumpkin patch. They do make you aware of this on the website.
Overall
We had a nice walk through the woods. My son enjoyed seeing the Halloween and Faerie decoration. I feel the price was a little too high but for the area probably to be expected.
The glitter really annoyed me! And I wish the decorations had been more cohesive.
