点评：This large bronze statue is one of 10 or more statues in and around Hyde Park.
Although Dalley was a well known and much loved figure in his day, I didn’t recognise his name and I doubt many Sydneysiders would either.
However in 1888 when he died, his funeral across the road at St Mary’s Cathedral was packed with 6000 mourners and another 10,000 people who stood outside. Money for the commemorative statue was entirely raised by the general public.
The inscription on the pedestal commemorates him as a “scholar, patriot and statesman”.
A quick Google revealed more.
Despite the fact that his parents were both convicts, he studied law, practised as a barrister and went on to become a politician, Solicitor-General and the first Australian appointed to the Privy Council of the UK. Unlike back in the UK, traditional class and social divisions were not necessarily obstacles to success in the new colony.
Dalley was admired as a a brilliant orator and a fervent nationalist and the statue is posed as if he is in the middle of a speech, with one hand is raised as if to emphasise a point.
He frequently delivered stirring street-corner speeches on the Constitution, he defended the bushranger Frank Gardiner in court and fought for the rights of the native-born to a political career.
Apparently, the larger than life statue is a very good likeness. It shows a stout man (he was known to love fine dining and banquets). He was also known for his colourful cravats and buttonholes and is shown wearing fashionable clothing of the colonial period, ie a buttoned up frock coat with a large flower on the lapel.
Overall, it is a nice statue, with an attractive green patina, set in a leafy, central section of Hyde Park, near the main fountain.
