点评:Before our trip to Japan in Dec 2023, I was googling on where I can go for a free and easy day trip that was near to Tokyo. I chanced upon a recommendation to Kawagoe which is an "old Kobe" city about 1 hour 30 mins away from Shinjuku.
We took a JR train from Shinjuku and arrived at Kawagoe JR station. The walk from the station to this Shrine is at least 30 mins. I found out on internet that we could take Bus 6 and stop directly in front of the Shrine.
After you exit from the JR station, you need to go down one level to the small bus interchange just below the station. As we couldn't find the correct bus, I just approached the bus driver of another bus for direction and found the correct bus immediately. So don't feel shy to ask any Japanese if you are lost as they are usually very helpful to guide you if they can. I spoken to them in simple single English word. They either point you to the correct place or might be able to reply you in simple English too!
The bus journey is about 10 mins and you need to pay attention to the bus stop name on the display panel. You enter the bus by the back door and alight the bus by the front door. You will need to tap your transport IC card or pay the cash at the exit.
This Shrine was built in the 6th century. As we went to this Shrine on Thursday morning, there was not a lot of people at this Shrine. Due to global warming, I was very surprised to see autumn colours of maple trees in this Shrine and one nearby garden.
On the main entrance, you will find “dry ponds” of pink and red wooden fishes. For 300 yen, you use the fishhook and “fish” out your fortune forecast. If the fortune forecast is not good, you can tie the fortune on the string at the Shrine and left the bad fortune forecast behind. Alternatively, you can just draw the fortune paper with 100 yen if you do not need the wooden fish. Just a note, the fortune will be written in Japanese only and you will need to use google translate to understand your fortune. I took my “red fish” home as a souvenir from this Shine.
You can move around the Shrine as long you do not enter the area that is not opened to public. There was a private blessing event happening in the Shrine when we visited.
After the visit, we walked to our next destination – Toki No Kane Bell Tower and Kawagoe Ichibangai!
