Legacy Museum的点评
点评：I made a specific trip to visit Alabama to see various civil rights sites, including a visit to the Legacy Sites. The sites consist of The Legacy Museum, The Freedom Monument Sculpture Park, and The National Memorial For Peace and Justice.
All of the sites are amazing and truly powerful. I had great expectations for them before I went and they far exceeded my expectations.
The Legacy Museum – Took you from the slavery ships to today’s ongoing struggle to gain, keep, and advance our civil rights. Everything from slave life to the domestic slave trade to the civil war to Jim Crow to the KKK to the lynchings to the civil rights movement to today.
The Freedom Monument Sculpture Park – The park has multiple sculptures and statues that depict so many aspects the civil rights movement. Too many great pieces of art work to describe. The most moving part for me was The National Monument To Freedom that has the last names of slaves from the 1870 census. You could look up your name to see if it connects you to your ancestors.
The National Memorial For Peace and Justice – This park focuses on the many lynchings that occurred. It is sad to see that people were subject to these lynchings for laws that were written just to punish those who were lunched as well as crazy customs (like being lynched for smiling at a white woman).
There is a boat ride down the Alabama river that takes you to the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park but they also provide a shuttle to each of the locations.
The sites are truly amazing but one of the other amazing parts is that it only cost $5 and there’s no charge for parking.
