点评:The Three Queens monument is located just below Blackbeard's castle. This area is easiest reached by walking north of Emancipation Park, turning right on Kongens Gade, then hiking up the 99 steps. On reaching the top of the steps, just stroll to the right and a cut stone wall will come into view. The steps to the right of the wall, with metal railings, lead to the Three Queens monument, which is the centerpiece of a small garden surrounded by hedges. This tribute was installed in 2005.
The sculpture depicts Mary Thomas, Axeline Salomon, and Mathilda McBean, who were all recognized as leaders of the 1878 Fireburn Labour riot on St. Croix. Each lady holds an item(s) related to the riot. The south facing lady has a machete and a flambeau. Both items are symbols of freedom and struggle. The lady facing east has a flambeau and the north facing lady has a kerosene oil lantern. The lantern was made famous by Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad in the USA, and is also known as a symbol of hope and freedom.
Slavery in the Danish West Indies was officially ended by an emancipation proclamation on 3 July 1848. For thirty years after emancipation, not much changed for the newly freed slaves, as they were "economically" depressed, by the plantation owners who paid ridiculously low wages and maintained poor working conditions. On 1 October 1878, the Three Queens were said to have organized a riot which led to buildings and plantations being burned. More than 70 rioters and 2 Danish soldiers were killed. There were many arrests after the revolt, which resulted in 12 rioters being hanged. A group of 34 rioters who were arrested included the Three Queens, and they were sent to Copenhagen, and jailed for 5 years. They returned to St Croix in 1887 and completed their sentences. It took many years for the former slaves to financially benefit from their freedom, but the Fireburn Riot is recognized as the event that marked the start of the change for better treatment of workers.
