点评:No matter where you view Stirling Castle from the Great Hall with its yellow lime wash stands out. The Great Hall was part of the tour we took and later returned to spend some more time there.
Built by James IV around 1503, it is still today one of the most impressive of medieval buildings in Scotland. It is also the largest banqueting hall in the country.
Probably one of the most famous occasions was the baptism of James IV 's son Henry in 1594. When a 5m ship decked with 36 bronze cannons was brought into the hall.
There is a dais at the far end for the King, Queen and there honored guest would be seated with a table then running the length of the hall. The dais is flanked by two large stain glass windows. There are five fire places set around the hall. In addition there are areas for musicians, serving area and a walkway. There is also a bridge that links the hall to the Palace.
When James VI became the King of England the castles royal importance diminished and the Great Hall eventually became a barracks for the soldiers stationed there. The Barracks extended over three floors and the magnificent hammerbeam ceiling was destroyed.
Today the Great Hall has been restored and once more returned to the majestic hall it was. Along with the impressive hammerbean roof.
