点评:While Guadix itself may be one of the oldest settlements in Europe, the occupation of the caves nearby seems to have been a more recent matter, and the place therefore lacks the historical pedigree of far more beautiful and interesting troglodytic bailiwicks such as Matera, Italy ( 3rd oldest city in the world), or Cappadocia in Turkey, more famous than both, and for good reason. The latter, in fact, is filled with many more “cave” churches of greater artistry and wonder.
Nevertheless, the original church at the core of the religious complex here is very evocative, although built over and somewhat ruined by a larger, more modern above ground church…Spanish architecture has a habit of never leaving good things alone.
A tour is strongly suggested here. It would be particularly interesting to hear of the clergy’s fate here during the Anarchist rampage and murder spree near the beginning of the civil war. No plaques are provided.
Take a moment to reflect and perhaps pray for “both sides.”
