点评:The ageing, ailing Interislander fleet once again showed its age. Yet another maintenance issue……. Be warned.
Following a super-friendly check-in and a seamless, easy boarding experience, we set sail; the captain announced that our arrival at Picton would be slightly delayed as the ferry was sailing the “long way around”, apparently for training purposes. No worries so far.
Then the ferry broke down in the middle of Wellington Harbour. The captain announced a technical issue; but he didn’t know what it was! Following several bland announcements from a subordinate that they’d “keep passengers updated”, the captain then announced that the problem could not be fixed (Chief Engineer’s advice) and that we were returning to the Wellington wharf; dismay all round. The captain also said we needed a tug boat and a pilot - but he didn’t know how long that would take! More dismay.
We floated stationary for around 45 minutes. I, and many other passengers, fearing we would not get to the South Island that day, booked Air NZ flights for the evening.
Then, out of the blue, someone (not the captain) announced we were sailing; they didn’t say where but they did say we’d arrive in “about 3 and a half hours. Turns out we did in fact head for Picton; but we still sailed the long way around - instead of following the usual (shorter) route, which he could have done, to make up lost time (and do the training another time).
Moral of the story; if you’re going to the South Island, fly Air NZ (who were very understanding and cancelled my booking) - at least until Kiwi Rail finally gets its act together and replaces the ancient Interislander fleet. Which may not be this decade.
