This beautiful spacious square at the edge of the historic old town was created at the end of the eighteenth century at the request of the King of Naples.
Monopoli had outgrown the old town and needed to expand beyond the walls of the jumbled and disorderly medieval city. The park was part of the organized plan for the new city, and was intended to serve as a transition. The new Monopoli was commonly called Borgo Nuovo, and the large "Piazza del Borgo Nuovo" as it was then known, became the meeting place of the city.
A tree-lined central corridor divides it into two separate squares. In one square there is the large fountain, and in the other the monument to the area residents who died in the First World War.
It is ringed by shops, café’s and bars.
