Spectacular Snow Walls, but Be Prepared for Crowds

点评：I visited the Yuki no Otani Snow Wall Walk at Murodo in late April 2026 as part of a two-day tour from Tokyo along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. The Snow Wall Walk is held near Murodo, the highest point on the route at 2,450 meters, and allows visitors to walk beside the towering snow walls created when the mountain road is cleared after winter. The walk is a seasonal event, usually held from mid-April to late June, shortly after the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route reopens after winter.
On the day of my visit, the weather forecast had made me worry that the walk might be canceled, but fortunately there was only light snow. According to our local mountain guide, the snow wall this year was 12 meters high. It was lower than the 20-meter peak recorded in 2000, but still an impressive and memorable sight.
The experience is especially striking because it takes place in late spring, when most other parts of Japan no longer feel wintry at all. Walking between the white walls of snow at Murodo gave me a strong sense of the scale of snowfall in the Tateyama region.
That said, visitors should be prepared for crowds and a lot of time spent in transit.
