Excellent WWII Airborne Museum & John Steele on the Steeple

点评：We spent a couple of days exploring the D-Day beaches and WWII sites in Normandy. You can’t see everything and we had to make some tough choices about what we could manage to see in the time frame and what we could not. Sainte-Mère-Église was well worth seeing. The small village was at the forefront of the Allied invasion. This was where the paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division were dropped on 5 June, 1944 (the night before the D-Day landings). It was the first town liberated by the Allied forces in WWII.
There are two ‘must-sees’ in Sainte-Mère-Église - the museum and the church.
We allowed about 2 hours here which was enough time to see the following:
i) The excellent Airborne Museum (€11.50) - most of our time was spent here and we had to drag ourselves away.
ii) The church steeple - look for the dangling dummy paratrooper on the steeple, representing John Steele who parachuted in but became caught on the church steeple for several hours
iii) the new statue of Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the WWII Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe (opposite the church)
iv) Memorial to Richard Winters - a must for anyone who has seen the excellent ‘Band of Brothers’ series. It’s just outside Sainte-Mère-Église, between the town and Utah Beach.
TIPS FOR SELF-DRIVING:
Sainte-Mère-Église is less than 15 minutes from Utah Beach, one of the D-Day landing sites. It has a number of cafes and places to grab lunch and a large, carpark behind the museum. I’d recommend buying ‘The D-Day Visitors Handbook’ (by K. Dennehy and Stephen T. Powers), I bought it before our trip and it was an incredibly useful guide with a lot of useful driving tips.
