点评:I've climbed at Big Rock for a couple of years. I've bought 3 annual passes.
In the past I've never had issue with the annual pass, excepting one summer where they posted a bizarre message to facebook saying they were closing the centre early and we should go and enjoy the sun. But, we'd already paid to climb. If they'd wanted us to go and buy and ice-cream or do something else perhaps they should have not taken our money earlier in the year to climb. But as ridiculous, insulting and patronising as that facebook message was, I worked around the early closing.
This year, however, I landed badly falling off a boulder and hurt my back which is not badly hurt but is taking a long time to heal. That has meant climbing 3x a week is no longer viable. So I decided to cancel the annual pass intending to climb less often and just pay on the door.
And wow, did they go out of their way to punish me for cancelling. Firstly, to cancel you can't just walk up to reception, smile and ask their staff - because, that would be too easy.
It seems it's not possible to train staff in the highly complex task of multiplying and subtracting a couple of numbers and then issuing a refund. So I did as instructed and sent a message asking to cancel. Nothing. I wait a day or 2 and send another. Nothing. I wait another day and send another. This time pointing out this is the 3rd message. This wakes up one of their astute staff members to put down his coffee and type a response. Their phd doctorate skilled enough to refund isn't there but will return "soon"
So I wait, and then I get a message saying my refund will be calculated from day after I last attended the gym, 15th Aug. Except I didn't attend on the 15th. I didn't leave the house on the 15th. I last attended on the 14th. I reply pointing this out - and as you can guess, no reply. I wait a couple more days and send another message pointing out the error and saying although 1 day doesn't seem like a big deal (ho ho, how naive I was) I want to make sure they haven't mixed up who is asking for the refund.
I'm assured my refund is "imminent"
Eventually I get a message telling me that they are going to charge me from March 25 -> August 25 at a monthly rate that didn't apply until July when they had a price rise.
i.e they have backdated a price rise to the beginning of my membership! I've now paid more to climb at bigrock from March -> July than all of their other customers.
When I pointed this out believing it was a mistake. I got the fastest reply I'm sure their staff have ever managed. Literally seconds later they were cutting and pasting a cryptic line from the terms and conditions. They seemed almost gleeful that they were ripping me off for their bosses benefit.
To add insult to injury, I've had to pay until 25th August, but they already told me my refund would be calculated from 15th, the day after the last day I attended.
i.e they basically implied that if I climbed after asking to cancel but before the refund was issued that I would get less refund. But actually that means I lost over a week, waiting for a refund, when I could have at least gone climbing while the professor of cancellations was doing the complex maths involved in figuring out how little they could get away with refunding. Ripped off twice.
And, not only that, this message explaining how little I would get in my refunded explained, after telling me ordinary staff can't give refunds I have to visit them for the refund.
Confused I sent a message asking if that was the case and if they could and would issue a refund if I visited. No reply. I sent the message again. No reply. And again, and again...and nothing. I found an earlier message where they'd "assured me that there was "no intention to make this difficult or long-winded" quoted that and asked again. Nothing.
I asked someone else to send Big rock a random enquiry. They got an immediate response. Hmm.
So I sat sending messages for a few hours that afternoon, and eventually they replied confirming that their staff actually can refund. No doubt he'd been out on a quick course and I drove there and I got my refund.
But I was ripped off twice. I've been overcharged for several months when the entry fee wasn't £79 a month, and I lost over a week where I've had to pay but they told me I would be refunded for that time if I didn't visit the gym.
So my advice is, never buy an annual pass from this company because, if for any reason you have to stop climbing they will go out of their way to rip you off and make the cancellation process unnecessarily difficult. And the silly thing is, whatever amount of money they've grabbed overcharging me, I would have paid more by attending in the future.
Hopefully they'll sell the business or it will inevitably fail and new owners will do things with equity.
As for the rest of gym, it's ok. I think it's slowly failing. e.g They had a nice set of lockers when I first joined. A few of them over time the locking mechanisms wore.
Obviously these are not complicated electromechanical devices or anything so you could fix them with a phillips screwdriver and a bit of nous. But each time a locker failed with someone's stuff trapped inside, they'd get a member of staff to attack the locker with a lump hammer and a chisel. I couldn't believe it the first time I saw it. To be fair if his experience working for BigRock is anything like mine as a customer recently, then he was probably enjoying the opportunity to relieve pent up tension by attacking company property. After removing the locker doors with violence they just left them....and they just left them for years with more and more of them with 'out of order' stickers or missing doors. If you tried to climb at any time when the gym wasn't empty you'd have no chance of finding and using a working locker.
And, of course, there's amply signage pointing out that if you lose anything Big Rock won't accept any responsibility.
Why not just fix them? It wouldn't have cost any more than the money they are scamming out of people who cancel annual passes. At one point I thought of just taking in some tools and fixing them myself.
Eventually, in the facebook post for their annual price rise (a post they make every year they put the prices up where they pretend they've thought long and hard to try and avoid it and try to appease everyone by saying they have 2 gyms. Even though one of those gyms is closed most of the time - and quite possibly all of the time when you want to climb) a few sarcastic messages about the lockers and they finally did something about them.
Instead of just fixing them though they appear to have gone on amazon searched for lockers, ordered by 'lowest price' and bought some lockers that I'd guess from their visual appearance typically find usage in prisons and asylum seeking detention centres. They work, but it's not a good look.
Similarly, quite often during the day, presumably to avoid rising energy costs they don't run the filters. Which should be of concern to customers but especially to staff who are spending 40 hours a week breathing in chalk and rubber dust to save their boss a few quid.
So should you go? Well yeah, the climbing can be good, but don't give them more than a months money in advance, and check they have the fans running.
