Palais des Académies的点评
点评：Walking back from the European Parliament along rue Montoyer, we found a park gate open on boulevard du Régent and couldn’t resist the temptation to have a quick peek. The garden surrounds the austerely symmetrical neoclassical ‘Palais des Académies’ (Academy Palace or House in English). Built in the early 19th century as a residence for the Dutch Prince William of Orange (1792-1849), the palace fell to the newly created Belgian State in 1830. Since then, it has housed barracks and a museum of modern art and is now home to five of Belgium’s seven academies. As far as we could see, a meeting was being held, but the building was not open to the public. So we took a stroll in the park. Compared to the adjoining Parc de Bruxelles, it is tiny, but it is dotted with some fine 19th-century bronze statues, some of which are disposed around a small pond. We also saw bronze busts of the chemist Jean Servais Stas (Thomas Vinçotte, 1897) and the lawyer and politician Jules Destrée (Armand Bonnetain, 1937) and a stone statue of the famous astronomer, mathematician, statistician and sociologist Adolphe Quételet (Charles-Auguste Fraikin, 1880). The park is enclosed by attractive wrought-iron fences and an ornate stone balustrade along rue Ducale. We loved the lions sitting on top of the gate pilasters but noticed a letter was missing from the inscription (‘aedes cademiarum’). The park of the Palais des Académies is a quiet place to rest your feet on one of the benches.
