点评：The first day of our two-week self-guided trip to Alaska last August took us to Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls. It was a wonderful way to experience close-up glacier views just a short distance from downtown Juneau.
We took the Capital Transit Bus #8 Downtown/Valley Express from the Downtown Transit Center. This service is available daily during the summer for $2.00 each way. After an approximately 30-minute ride, we got off at Dredge Lake Road and enjoyed a leisurely 1.5 mile, 50-minute walk along a paved, forest-lined path to the Visitor Center.
The Mendenhall Glacier is visible from a distance along the road, and the trail paths from the Visitor Center to the Glacier and Nugget Falls are well-maintained and shaded. We arrived before the midday crowds, which allowed us to enjoy the views and take photos before the tour buses and vans began to arrive.
Mendenhall Glacier is the most accessible glacier via public transit bus or other commercial operator buses. Visiting Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau was such a highlight on our first day in the Capital City, and I truly hope you have an amazing time experiencing those incredible glacier views yourself. For those traveling on their own schedule, using Juneau’s public transportation is an excellent way to see the city and its landmarks.
