点评:Jimmy Melrose Park is a long, grassy stretch that runs beside the Glenelg jetty, along the beach. It’s only small - just a narrow beachside strip of a park.
There’s no playground or toilet block but there are several benches scattered along the foreshore for those who’d like to sit and quietly gaze out across the water.
This was our starting point for the Glenelg to Seacliff Coastal Walking Trail.
The park is named for Jimmy Melrose (1913-1936), a young local lad who captured the world’s imagination as a bold, young aviator. These were the days when planes were newfangled flying machines and flying them was daring, dangerous and extremely glamorous.
Jimmy was setting new Australian and world records in his DH80A Puss Moth. He had just turned 21 when entered the 1934 MacRobertson London to Melbourne Air Race. He was the youngest of all the contestants and the only solo entrant to finish.
On arrival in Melbourne, the Australian public went nuts. A crowd of 100,000 lined the streets as he was driven in a motorcade to a State reception and luncheon at Parliament House.
Apparently his car was occasionally forced to stop because people surged around it, clambering on to it. He was all but smothered in bouquets thrown to him by fan-frenzied women.
Tragically, in 1936, aged just 22, he died on a charter flight from Melbourne to Darwin when extreme weather hit his Heston Phoenix plane.
The main points of interest in the park are:
A bronze bust of Jimmy Melrose
A blue information panel nearby which gives a brief history of his life and achievements.
Empty Vessel, a lovely modern sculpture at the far end of the park
the historic Glenelg mansion, Glenara which overlooks the park
