点评:There are many fine gardens in Sussex, but Leonardslee is exceptional. Lakes and ponds which now look so calm were created to provide waterpower for furnaces. It has been a garden since 1801, but it is the more recent residents who have left their mark. The Loder family were avid plant collectors, and deeply involved in breeding new varieties of rhododendrons - many of which have their name. While it looks wonderful throughout the year - it is spectacular in the spring when the azaleas and rhododendrons are flowering.
Its a garden of many parts - at the same level as the house is the famous rock garden. This is one of the best preserved Pulhamaite rockeries in the country. In late April and Early May it is spectacular with flowering azaleas. Also at this level is the camellia walkway, which as well as camellias has many other spring flowering shrubs. It is also pleasantly cool on a hot day. The oldest part of the garden is the Loderi, with huge tree sized rhododendrons, giant conifers and unusual palms.
Once you have explored at the top level, follow the path past the dell to the memorial table. This leads on down to the string of lakes. Paths then lead up the 'newer' parts of the garden on the other side of the valley - to those planted to mark queen Elizabeths' coronation. If you are quiet here you may see one of the escaped wallabies.
On the practical side, there is a cafe which can quickly get overwhelmed on a sunny day. There is also a lack of shade when sitting outdoors. The food is mid priced, but you do get good quality with it. You are not permitted to bring your own picnics. The toilets are all at the upper level. There are numerous sculptures for sale located around the garden. They are very variable, and while some sit well within the landscape, others seem more random. There is a whole days worth and more to explore in these wonderful gardens.
