The Lovely Park with a History
煤气厂公园的点评
点评：This huge 21-acre Urban Park was once the site of the former Seattle Gas Light Company Gasification Plant. The remnants of the factory are still visible. Some of the massive pieces of the old plant have been incorporated into the landscape, while others have been reconditioned and re-painted in a variety of colors to become a Children’s playground in a “Play Barn”.
Soon after we walked in, we climbed an artificial hill where we saw a sculpted Sundial built into the summit. It was cool. Then we descended and walked along pathways surrounded by very green grass inhabited by sunbathing people and tons of Geese strutting around. We had to be very careful where we were stepping --LOL…! Bicyclists and Skateboarders were allowed as long as they did not interfere with the pedestrians. This was also the area from where we got some drop-dead gorgeous views of the Space Needle and the City.
Right below was Lake Union. It looked clear and accessible, but it is known to contain hazardous substances. Therefore, swimming, wading and fishing are forbidden. Our favorite part was watching the Sea Planes take off and land in the water.
Locals come here for weekend events, for picnicking or to fly kites because it gets quite windy here.
We saw this Park when it was featured in two of the Episodes of the Reality Show “The Amazing Race”. Ever since, we have wanted to see it in person. A wonderful sunny day made our walk very enjoyable, and the history and the views made it worth our time spent here.
