I just returned from my second trip to the Merry-Go-Round Museum in Sandusky, Ohio, and it did not disappoint! I went with friends and we had a fantastic time. This is truly one of those hidden gems in Northern Ohio that deserves way more attention.
What makes this place special is that it’s really **two museums in one**. One section focuses on the history of Cedar Point with great displays and artifacts, while the main focus is the incredible collection of carousel horses and animals. There are so many different styles and designs — beautiful traditional horses of course, but also pigs, dogs, frogs, ostriches, and many more unique creatures. Many of these pieces are over 100 years old and the level of detail is stunning.
One of the coolest parts is that **live carving happens right in the museum** if you are lucky to hit the right time. You can watch skilled carvers working on new pieces. Also, one dollar of your admission goes toward riding the beautiful carousel housed in the museum…it rotates at 10–12 mph.
**Tips for your visit:**
- Make sure to talk to the **docents** — they’re very knowledgeable and passionate.
- There’s a helpful **museum app** that enhances the experience.
- Don’t miss the giant coffee table book by local author **Ken Miller** about Cedar Point history — it’s full of wonderful illustrations and stories.
You can easily spend 1 to 2 hours here without feeling rushed. The presentations are very well done and the whole atmosphere is delightful.
