点评:Strzelecki’s Lookout is an elevated point at the start of the Memorial Walking Trail.
One side of the lookout, looks down over the modern city and sprawling suburbs of Newcastle, with a view as far as Port Stephens in the northeast. Its’ a panoramic outlook, with views to the north extending to Barrington Tops, the Hunter Valley in the northwest, and Mount Sugarloaf in the far west.
On the other side, the view is over the coastal cliffs and beaches.
The lookout commemorates the 19th century Polish explorer, Paul Edmund Strzelecki. One of Australia’s lesser known explorers, he had a special Newcastle connection.
Between 1839 and 1843, he walked more than 7000 miles, zig-zagging across NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania on foot. Among his achievements, he discovered gold in Bathurst and was the first to climb Mt Kosciusko in the Australian Alps but, most importantly for Newcastle, he was also a skilled geologist.
He collected rock and mineral specimens and drew up meticulous geological and mining maps. His research and knowledge of chemical and coal deposits would ultimately play a key role in the development of area and its coal industry.
A large black marble memorial plaque at the lookout has a copy of one of Strzelecki’s diagrams of the Newcastle coal basin. It was drawn in 1845. Below it, is a modern diagram of Newcastle in 1991 for comparison.
The lookout and the Memorial Walking Trail are easily combined. We parked at the lookout in the High St carpark and then walked along the trail to Bar Beach. Parking was free but it’s only a small car park. Another option is to park at the Bar Beach end of the trail where there’s a much bigger carpark (also free) and walk in the other direction. It’s not a looped trail so whichever end you start at, you’ll have to re-trace your steps.
