Two of us middle aged guys from London wanted to watch the England v Greece UEFA Nations League rematch (in Athens). We had lost to Greece 2:1 at Wembley on 10th October. This match was important! Our friend was teaching online back at the hotel.
We left our central hotel to venture out into the walled city to find a bar offering sports coverage (we thought that the N Cyprians might want to watch Eng v Gr out of curiosity as they are in another group). Most bars were not the usual local bars with permanent TVs on.
We explored a new area to us that included the twin churches. I asked a group of young men sitting outside Rosa bar if they knew of any bars with football, luckily one jumped up to say 'come along' so we followed. He was the owner of this De Molay bar, his friends said!
We followed him into this amazing space where he drew down the screen on the alter and searched through the channels. Meanwhile Country and Western music was playing and a few people were in the historic building. More were outside in the warm evening.
We decided to stay anyway and have a drink as he was working so hard to serve us! The only local beer they had was Efes Special (4.5%) in the green bottle. We were not interested in the imported (no doubt more expensive) beers.
The very friendly barman joked with us as his boss managed to find the right EXXEN channel.
A few minutes later the warm up started, with lots of adverts, but we were happy. The boss offered to turn up the volume but we said we could not understand the commentary anyway and were happy with the music.
The match began at 21:45 and I took a selfie video to post on fb using their wifi.
Unfortunately at 21:51 the signal was lost and I had to find the boss to restart it. Another guy in the same jacket found it again but we had missed goal #1 (by England!)...ooops. The rest of the show was uninterrupted and we started on our second beer, then third after half time.
The clean toilets were in the sacristy, behind an ancient door, very weird.
After another two goals later in the second half we shared a beer. The owner, Aygun, checked up on us and we took a selfie in his great bar.
By full time extra time it was 3:0 to England. We were happy and quite merry. It must have been a bit weird for the locals to see two tourists reacting to the match with no audio.
We left happy, quite late for us at 23:50, a couple of people were still there drinking. I think that Aygun had made a bit more business that evening with our seven beers. Good luck to him.
On arriving back to our hotel our host said that the bar was about eight years old. We cannot remember it from our visit then.
