A fun visit, with a few caveats
National Comedy Center的点评
点评：This is a very modern museum which creatively uses electronics to tell the story of comedy. On entering, the museum asks its visitors to provide their comedy preferences which are coded to a wristband, and your experience in the museum will reflect your taste in comedy. When you’re ready to leave, the museum will also tell you what type of comedy you prefer based on the amount of time you spend at different areas around the museum. Since I spent a fair amount of time at the Ernie Kovacs exhibit, featuring a surreal television comedian from the 1950’s, the museum told me that I liked surreal comedy, which generally isn’t my favorite. But the idea is nice.
The emphasis is on American comedy. I watched short documentaries on ‘Tonight Show’ host Johnny Carson and the late 1960’s TV show ‘Laugh-In’ that I thoroughly enjoyed, but if you’re an international visitor, they might not interest you as much. There is also a fairly heavy concentration on standup comedy, perhaps because the explosion in the popularity of this type of comedy corresponded with the widespread use of cable TV, so there’s a lot of footage available. One of the lessons of the museum is that the most celebrated and groundbreaking comedians such as Lenny Bruce and George Carlin aren’t always the funniest. Also, a lot of comedy is period dependent, and comedy that relies on satire and current events doesn’t always age well. Changing social mores can also suck the life out of comedy.
Since the museum relies heavily on electronics, the visitor experience will be diminished if the displays don’t function properly. It’s also quite an expensive visit, so check the cost before going to make sure it’s worthwhile. I went on a Sunday morning during the summer, and it was uncrowded which was nice. It was a very entertaining three hours or so, and I could have stayed longer.
