The State Fair Was Improved A Bit This Year (Updated July 2023)

It still gets 3 stars though, because there used to be over twice as much to do and see.
(I wanted to post this review much sooner, but I could not get there until the last day this year.)
FIRST OF ALL
The California State Fair was far more crowded on the last day this year than I have seen it in many years. They say that’s because it was cooler on the last weekend, but it may also be due to the fact that there was a bit more to see. It’s still not restored to the level of the 1990s, when it took 3 days to see and do everything, but hopefully it’s getting there.
EXPO CENTER
(The buildings next to the carnival)
All 8 buildings had things in them this year, but (for example) the “Candy Maze” was just a candy store.
Lost World of Dragons
The dragon exhibit was very good. It had life size animatronics with simple movements. But some of the push button displays were not working.
Wild Science
Not much science. Not much to see. No school science projects or electronics or movie props like they have had in the past. Nice marble run machine though - not the best I’ve seen, but fun to watch for a little while.
Fine Arts
This year there was far more than last year, and many pieces were very good. Same with the Student Showcase.
THE COUNTIES BUILDINGS
(Buildings A & B, where the Cinnamon Rolls are)
Only ONE County Exhibit in the Counties Buildings
The Counties Buildings were much cooler this year than any other building at the Fair. However, my own personal favorite at the State Fair was almost completely missing this year. There was only one County Exhibit. In previous years you could see an elaborate miniature town with animatronic dolls in all the windows, a forest or two, a boat in a river of actual flowing water, a mine tunnel to walk through, an old fashioned general store to walk through full of antique products to look at, an actual Saloon from Bodie, etc…
This year there were a lot of enlarged fruit crate labels on the walls, a few more picnic tables and places to sit down, and quite a bit to see, but only one County Exhibit.
The GARDENS
There are no Gardens between the Counties Building and the Vendor Building any more. It’s been completely taken over by wine sales, when the entire area used to be big gardens, waterfalls, huge decorative items….
THE VENDORS BUILDINGS
(Buildings C & D, on the east end of the buildings)
This year there was way more stuff for sale, and cooler stuff than in the last few years.
THE DINOSAUR TENT BUILDING (near the Jacuzzis)
No Dinosaur Building in years.
FOLSOM VALLEY RAILWAY
The train from Folsom also hasn’t been back to the State Fair since about the 1990s. And when I eMailed them about it, they told me they would be happy to bring it back again but the State Fair hasn’t asked them.
I LOVE LUCY EXHIBIT
Nothing like this in years either, which is really too bad, because it’s a replica of the apartment with actual furniture and items from the TV show.
THE GIANT FOUNTAIN
(Near the Water Slide Park)
It was going again, but not the Water Slide Park. It was cool near the fountain but you can’t get in it.
There was water in all the canals again.

今年县建筑比博览会上的任何其他建筑都要凉爽得多。然而，我个人最喜欢的国家博览会今年几乎完全消失了。只有一个县展览。在过去的几年里，你可以看到一个精致的微型小镇，所有的窗户里都挂着电子玩偶，一两片森林，一条真正流水的河流中的一艘船，一条可供步行的矿井隧道，一家老式的杂货店，里面充满了参观古董产品、博迪 (Bodie) 的真正沙龙等……
今年，墙上贴了很多放大的水果箱标签，多了几张野餐桌和坐下的地方，还有很多东西可看，但只有一个县展览。
花园
县政府大楼和供应商大楼之间不再有花园。它已经完全被葡萄酒销售所取代，当时整个区域曾经是大花园、瀑布、巨大的装饰品……。
