Great Museum! Well worth a visit…
东京都美术馆的点评
点评：We went here after seeing just a poster of the artist on exhibition…a Japanese artist I had never heard of named Tanaka Isson.
On a par with any of the early 20th Century European masters, Isson was a child prodigy who lived a somewhat tragic life and wasn’t really discovered until after his death.
His art was absolutely stunning! Imagine seeing Gustav Klimt of Edward Munch for the first time after never having heard of them. That was what it was like seeing Isson’s work.
The museum is well laid out, and though VERY crowded, a complete retrospective of his work with descriptions in both Japanese and English.
It made our whole trip to Tokyo worthwhile and though his work might be well known to Japanese, we were the only Westerners in the entire seven to eight exhibition rooms.
A discovery and experience I’ll long remember.
