点评:Continuing our trip along the Trotternish Peninsula our next stop was at the spectacular Kilt Rock (Creag an Fheilidh in Gaelic). There is an ample car park, with a fee. The paths along the cliff top are easily accessible and there is a good safety fence. There are paths down to the bay below, the tide was coming in so we did not go down. On the beach below there are Jurassic dinosaur footprints.
Kilt Rock is yet another classic geological formation, a 90-metre-high wall of multi-coloured hexagonal columns of basalt rock and dolerite sills, the columns are stacked on top of each other, creating a striking visual effect resembling the pleats of a tartan kilt.
From the viewing deck on the north of the car park you get a great view of Mealt Falls as the waterfall drops 55 meters into the sea. The view of the waterfall cascading down the rock face is truly breath-taking, with the columnar basalts on the cliff as a backdrop. I would expect the most spectacular view of the falls would be from the sea.
Kilt Rock is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Isle of Skye. It offers views stunning natural beauty and a trip back in time to the geological history of the region.
We spent about 30 minutes taking in the views and surprisingly it was not too busy.
