Jewel Cave National Monument的点评
点评：This was our second choice since Wind Cave was not offering tours in the summer of 2024.
The visitor’s center was informative, but we did not really learn much beyond what we had not already learned earlier in the day at Wind Cave.
We had a reservation for the ninety minute Scenic Tour. It was on time, lasting ninety minutes, but it was not very scenic.
Our Ranger Guide was knowledgeable. His presentations were informative and, where appropriate, a bit humorous; but it was not a great experience. The formations were not as interesting as those we have seen in other caves we have visited, and the interesting small features on the walls and ceiling were visible only when briefly illuminated by the Ranger’s flashlight. We learned that this is a dry cave so there are very few stalactites and stalagmites because they require dripping water for formation.
It felt like we were hurrying from point to point, then stopping, waiting for the slower people to catch up, then listening to a presentation. There were thirty people in our group, and it felt like we were doing a lot of waiting.
The “Bacon” described on the website was probably the most interesting thing we saw, but we were hurried past it too fast to look or take a picture.
The website told us there would be lots of stairs. The steps are industrial steel stairs and catwalks. The paths are formed, textured concrete. It is all OSHA approved, so we never felt unsafe.
The temperature was forty six degrees as described.
Ninety minutes felt like a long time underground. We spent a lot of time just waiting for the slower people to catch up. And we did not see interesting things.
We were happy we had not signed up for the two and a half hour tour!
