Jewel Cave National Monument的点评
点评：We'd been here years ago and were in the area and came back. It’s a bit of a drive away from Custer through the winding Black Hills. A pretty drive. Once there, we wind through the prairie to get to the Visitor Center. At all Parks/Monuments we see the video and tour the museum.
Visitor Center – a nice visitor center. Unfortunately, don’t remember too much about it.
View Video – interestingly, the video is in a separate building. And a rather long video (about 23 minutes). We did it after the tour. As usual, it is a good video with both historical and geological information. Of interest is the Cave exploration. A couple who had just gotten into spelunking were instrumental in exploring the Cave and discovering that it was quite extensive. Before their work, only a relatively small portion of the Cave was known.
Cave Tour – we took the Discovery Tour. Our Ranger guide was new to this Park having been here only a week. She did a good job for being here so recently. We went down the elevator to a large open room of several layers. She explained the discovery of the Cave and its formation. It’s one of the longest Caves in the world with new exploration continuing. Other than the presentation area, we did no touring of the Cave. There really weren’t any cave formations (e.g., stalactites, stalagmites) either here or in the rest of the cave for that matter.
The Cave Tour is short and quite limited. We did learn about the Cave. But we just stood around in a big room. Could have done it without the Tour. May not try this one again.
