Free Views of the Manhattan Skyline and the Statue of Liberty

点评：The famous Staten Island Ferry has been in operation since 1817. Although meant for commuters, the ferry offers a great way for tourists to get out in the New York Harbor for wonderful views of the Manhattan skyline at no cost since the ferry is free. You will also pass near the Statue of Liberty and the views are closer on the trip to Staten Island rather than on the return. Find a spot along the railing on the right side of the ferry when boarding. For best views of the Manhattan Skyline, head to the back of the ferry when sailing away from Manhattan or go to the front of the ferry when returning. Ferries leave every 30 minutes on the top of the hour and 30 minutes after the hour 24 hours a day. Try to avoid those during peak commuting time in the morning and late afternoon. However, there will still be thousands of other tourists waiting to board when you arrive at the Ferry Building as this is one of the most popular things for a visitor to do when in NYC but the ferries are huge and can accomodate huge numbers so there will be no issues getting on. If you want to be one of the first on board to pick your spot, arrive 20 minutes before the departure time. There isn't much to do in the immediate area after disembarking on the Staten Island side so you may want to just get off and wait for the next ferry returning. However, I always like to get a drink at the River Dock Cafe near the terminal and sit out on the patio if the weather is nice. I've never ridden at night but the views of the Manhattan skyline after dark would be spectacular and I'll have to try this on the next trip to NYC.
